Descendants of William SMALLWOOD

Third Generation

(Continued)

CAUTION:  Some of the information in this GEDCOM file was obtained from census records and has not been verified.  Please verify it before re-publishing or include a caution message with the published material.  If a question mark (?) is shown next to a first name, this means the individual's parentage is questionable.  Thank you.  Disclaimer

38. Wilkinson (Elisha, Elijah?) SMALLWOOD (Elijah , William ) was born in 1797/1822 in Kentucky. He died in Jan 1862 in Missouri. He was buried in Veteran of Mexican War.

POSSIBLE:
CLAY, KY 1810
PG 160: Elijah Smallwood 00100-10100
SAME PAGE: Pleasant Johnson 00100-00000
PG 158: Wm Broughton 10100-00100 (age 16-26)
NEXT DOOR: Jos? Broughton 00001-10001 (age 45+)

From Bob Rhodes: When the Smallwod family left KY by boat , they lost everything in a storm on the Mississippi River, they ended up in ILL. and stayed awhile and then to MO.
He was talking about W. and Eliza Johnson Smallwood family...don't know where this story came from, perhaps their family stories? ma

Wilkinson may have been born abt 1797 according to widow's Mexican War pension claim he was age 64 in 1862 but according to 1860 census he was age 38 in 1860 - we are not sure which is correct. He may have been married previously.

The US-Mexican War (1846-1848)
Wilkinson Smallwood's widow Eliza filed pension claim Dec. 7, 1887 - Received Jan. 30, 1883
Wilkinson died June 1862 at age 64
birth would be 1797-1798

EMAIL FROM ma:
Sandy, IF Wilkinson was 64 when he died in 1862 that would make him born about 1798 and a possible brother to our Hezekiah born 1799. I haven't heard about Lee Smallwood until this week and I tried to Google, etc., him with no results. Middle name is a reasonable supposition. The Johnston from Sweden is spelled incorrectly...it would be a form of Jonsson. Again, these are family stories that need to be checked... ma

Eliza filed for widow's pension 1887 in Hannibal, Marion, MO - soldier's name Wilkinson, died Jan 1862. The age 64 is shown on the pension record but I think it was the age of Eliza at the time of the claim.

Email to MA:
MA - I'm not sure if Wilkinson was born earlier than 1822. He served in the Mexican War which took place 1846-1848. If he was born 1797-1798 he was close to age 50 during the Mexican War. That's pretty old to be serving, but possible. The pension claim says he was age 64 in June, 1862 - I suppose we have to go with that since it's documented.

Mary Ann,
I will scan and send to you ,but quickly I will tell you this.

Charles Winegar(Weniger) married Eliza Wheeler whose father's ancestors came from England before the War of 1776 and settled in VA. Her GGGrandmother was a full blooded Cherokee Indian squaw doctor in us territory--KY.before the gov. sent the cherokee to indian Territory.
Eliza's GGGrandfather was JNO.JOHNSTON whose parents came from Sweden. One of the Johnston's daughters(name unknown) married LEE SMALLWOOD, Lee Smallwood was from NC of English descent. Thier son Elisha, married Eliza JOHNSON (no kin to Johnston) whose parents came from sweden. They had 3 children; Tabytha,1840,Jimmie,1842,and Elizabeth,1844. Elisha did not live long after the war.

Elizabeth Smalwood married Hezekiah Wheeler, born 1840,whose ancestors were of English descent and were located in VA. before coming to KY. Elizabeth and Hezekiah had three children: Willie,Doug.and Eliza. Eliza married Charles E. Winegar, and they had two boys:Walter,1887,Milton,1889. Milton married Mary Silver, and they had five children: Frances,Walter,Henry,Warren, and Ann.

Mary Ann, This is a copy of a letter from Mr. Winegar to Bob Rhodes. Let me know what you think.

message board:
An interesting, but unexplained sidelight to these proceedings, is that according to the 1787 Census of Virginia - Berkeley County Tax List A, Henry AMBROSE paid the taxes for himself, his son, Mathias, and a "P. STORM". He was married to Sarah in 1760 in Berkeley Co., Virginia. One source says her name was Sarah Margaret; another says Sarah Catherine. Her maiden name is not known. An obvious possibility is HANBY. Another possibility to be researched is SMALLWOOD. According to the IGI, her grandson, John Bell, named a daughter Sarah Catherine Smallwood Ambrose. Another IGI record shows Sarah C. Ambrose as the sponsor/relative for the baptism of Wilkinson SMALLWOOD born 1822 in Kentucky. Sarah could have been living in 1822, although we have no knowledge of any of her descendants going to Kentucky.

from MA:
I have the CW papers on another Wilkinson born about 1840 who died in August 1862 before his son, another Wilkinson, was born in December1862...from Clark County, MO which I feel is part of our tribe. That is the one married to Sarah Catherine Ambrose in February 1862...she later married a Harlan Payne and moved to KS and then died in UT. There is another older son, by 3 years, Lewis Smallwood on one of the Census records as a brother to Wilkinson 1862???

to MA:
MA - were you aware that Wilkinson Smallwood who m. Eliza Johnson may have been American Indian or married one? You've probably seen most of this, but am passing it along...

It is not proven that Rachel was the daughter of Elijah - however, her husband, Stephen Ring was a witness to the marriage of Jonathan Smallwood and India Howard. Since Elijah died in 1810, it is possible that Rachel was living with a relative in Russell, VA, or she may have been an unknown daughter of William Smallwood and Sarah Philpot. since her husband was living near them in 1800.

Rachel married Stephen ? RING son of Thomas ? RING Sr. in 1796 in Rowan Co, NC. Stephen was born about 1775 in North Carolina . He died in Aug 1817 in Ft. Claborne, VA.

Michael is probably Stephen's father:

NOTE: Stephen was not living near the other Rings in 1800 census, therefore he may not have been Michael's son. There was a Thomas Ring in 1790 Stokes, NC and in 1800 Knox, KY. It is possible this was Stephen's father since others in the Smallwood/Ragan/Philpot group went there or near there.

MA - I found Stephen Ring in 1800 census in Rowan, NC along with William Smallwood and Sarah Philpot, Zadock Smallwood and some other Philpots. If he was the witness to Jonathan's marriage and was married to Rachel Smallwood, it makes sense that he would be living near some Smallwoods families. The William who is shown below is the one was married to Sarah Philpot. It's possible that Zadock was an unknown son of William who died before 1820 and Rachel is an unknown daughter. Zadock circulated in Russell, VA where Stephen Ring's widow and son were living later. Also, in 1790 there were two Rings in Rowan, NC: Martin and Michael. I'll do research on them.

Here is a little tidbit that I found at the Library of Congress. It was in a book entitled "War of 1812 Pensioners" on page 1497. It lists "Ring, Stephen, Old War IF-#27374, srv as a Pvt in the US Arty." The information that I have heard so far is that Stephen (husband of Rachel Smallwood) died at Ft.Claiborne, Va in 1816. I have tried unsucessfully to find any mention of a Ft. Claiborne, but as yet haven't found it. Does anyone know what the phrase "Old War" refers to? or Where the original information about Ft Claiborne came from?

This is my update to Grace Ellen BARTEE b.1884, Scranton (or Fairfax), Osage Co., Kansas in the event any other BARTEEs of this line will benefit from this information.

Harvey "Jack" BARTEE m. Nancy Ellen BOLEN (b.2 Feb 1859 in Springfield, Clay Co., Illinois)Sept. 1874. Their nine children born between 1875-1899, likely all in Scranton, KS, were named: Jesse, Mary, LuluBell, Grace, Charlie, Nellie Carrie, Ida, Elizabeth, and James.

Grace's father, Harvey "Jack" BARTEE b.1849, Russell Co., VA was the son of Mahala RING BARTEE (b.NC) and Jesse BARTEE (b.TN.)who were married 2 Nov 1824 in Russell Co., VA (according to internet source.) Mahala and Jesse BARTEE had thirteen children according to son Harvey's records which were recently located: Martha, Delilah, Thomas, Amanda, William, Rachel, David, Mary, Elvira, Tabitha, Harvey, and Melvina; all born between 1828-1850. I am missing one name. However, the time period between their recorded marriage year of 1824 and their first child's birth year of 1828 is somewhat odd.

Mahala RING was the dau of Rachel SMALLWOOD and Stephen RING and further information on their line is available through the RING surname forum. I am still searching for the parents/siblings of Jesse BARTEE and some other verification of his TN roots. The only other lead I have on him is a connection to the coal or mining occupation.

Randolph settled in Owsley Co KY which is not that far from Rockcastle Co KY where Hezekiah was in 1850. Also, in 1800 his father William was in North Carolina where Hezekiah was born.

Randolph married Rebecca or Rachel ASHCRAFT. Rebecca was born about 1781 in PA. She died on 10 Dec 1852 in Owsley Co., Kentucky.

They had the following children:

+ 129 F i Margaret SMALLWOOD
+ 130 M ii James Simeon SMALLWOOD
+ 131 F iii Elizabeth SMALLWOOD
+ 132 M iv 1st Lt. William J. SMALLWOOD

44. Samuel SMALLWOOD (William , William ) was born about 1780 in NC or MD. He died prob before 1850.

SENT 7/25/2005:
MA - another interesting item: Sarah Akers who married Samuel Smallwood (s/o Smallwood/Philpot) had a brother James Akers who was living next door to the widow of Adam George Winegar in 1850 Floyd, Indiana.

Adam George WINEGAR and Charles E. WINEGAR are 1st cousins 1 time removed. Adam George WINEGAR and Phebe WININGER are 1st cousins. Adam George WINEGAR and Elijah Jasper WININGER (m. Nancy McKinsey) are 1st cousins. Their common ancestors are Andrew WINEGAR and Polly .

These Winegars were from Hawkins, TN. That mysterious Wm. Smallwood who was in Hawkins, TN in 1830 has to be connected to Smallwood/Philpot. I think he was the one in Surry, NC in 1810 and 1820. The Winegar connection to Wilkinson Smallwood and his connection to Rockcastle/Laurel KY is a HUGE clue to connect our Hez to this William Smallwood, and therefore, to Smallwood/Philpot. Also there were Smallwoods in Floyd, Indiana - Thompson Smallwood, s/o Samuel Smallwood and Sarah Akers, was m. there in 1836 to a Louisa Jeffries (another Jeffries connection), among others. Wilkinson may have been a son of this mysterious William if he was born 1797 - if born 1822 not sure. Sandy
