Email to Nancy:
Nancy - Some of the Giffins who were in Mifflin, PA at the same time as Henry Carson and James and John McFadden may have been in Belmont, OH in 1810 with some McFaddens. They might be connected to Mary Carson, d/o Adam. Do you know anything about these McFaddens? I believe Robert and William Giffin were brothers of James Giffin who married Margaret Carson d/o of Henry Carson. There were also some Fawsets there.
Thanks, Sandy

FROM GEORGE
Sandy, I copied selected pages of "A Schedule of the Whole Number of Persons within the County of Washington in the Territory of the United States of America South of the River Ohio on the last Saturday in July, 1791" , the census of Washington County ordered by Governor William Blount. In Captain Depew's Company, we find David Carson (50 acres), David Carson Jr (0 acres), David Carson Sr. (0 acres), and Little David Carson (250 acres - maybe little, but not insignificant). Also, Robert Carson, Sr. and Robert Carson, Jr. Other censuses from that period include Williams, Johns, Moses, and Andrews. I have not been able to identify which of the Davids is my ancestor. I do know that the David who married Marey Burke in 1794 is my ancestor. His son Milton is my line. Also, I have not been able to figure out the connections between David and the other Carsons. David and Marey (or Mary) moved to Blount County sometime prior to 1800 (there is a David Carson in Blount County in the 1800 census). There was a sheriff of Blount County about then named John Burke. I have speculated that he might be Mary's father, but I have no evidence to show that he is. David and Mary moved to Cleveland, TN (the name of the county escapes me just now - maybe Bradley) at some point. They still have descendants living there, although their names are not Carson. In addition to the son Milton, they had a son Joseph and a son Robert, and a daughter Nancy. Thanks for passing on the link.

George

from Nancy:
(The following from Jay Nielson):
Agnes HARE: A Daniel HARE, soldier in the war of 1812, was seriously injured and wrote a will before his death. The will was proved in Fayette Co. (PA) in 1813, and names his mother, Agnes HARE, as executor. She was living in Dunbar township. There is also a record of a James HARE of Fayette Co. being killed in 1813 in the War of 1812; perhaps this is an error and refers to Daniel. A Daniel HARE shows up on the tax lists for Dunbar township in 1799; the probable husband of Agnes. Daniel Sr. was apparently dead before 1813; there are no other HARE wills in Fayette Co. prior to 1834; however, looking through the county history, there appear to be other HARES listed throughout the book as late as the 1860’s.

1/28/2006 - I just received an email from another Carson researcher (George) who is a descendant of the David Carson who married Mary Burke 1794 in Washington, TN. He sent the following information:
I copied selected pages of "A Schedule of the Whole Number of Persons within the County of Washington in the Territory of the United States of America South of the River Ohio on the last Saturday in July, 1791" , the census of Washington County ordered by Governor William Blount.
So now we know there were TWO Robert Carsons and FOUR David Carsons in Washington, TN in 1791. We can rule out the one who married Mary Burke being the same one who married Margaret Ellis. However, depending on the birth years of these Davids, one of them may be "our" David. I am waiting to hear back from George because I asked him to give me his David's birth year, etc.

Sandy,
Here's what I have on the Carson and Beedle/Beadle family.
1. Mary Carson, daughter of David Carson and Margaret Ellis, married Aaron T. Beedle. (Also see Susanna Carson below)
2. Elizabeth Carson, daughter of David Carson and Margaret Ellis, married another man named Beedle.
My source for 1. and 2. is a Family Group Record (FGR) made by Leonard L. Robinson of Casper, WY, dated 1985. The FGR is for children of David Carson and Margaret Ellis. There are a couple of pretty wild claims on this FGR; namely that David Carson lived to be 110, and that he served in the Revolutionary War (even though he was born in 1775!) The claim that the family is related to Kit Carson may be true, although that is legendary in most Carson families.
At one time, I bought a stack of FGRs from the Carson FGR Exchange, and thus I have two of Leonard Robinson's FGRs. His other FGR is for Henry Carson and Rebecca Fowler, a son of David Carson and Margaret Ellis.
Note that Leonard Robinson spelled the name " BEADLE .
3. Susanna Carson m. Aaron Beedle. My source says Film 974057: Miami Valley Will Abstracts.
4. Susannah Carson b. 1720 Augusta Co. VA, m. Henry Carson b. 1720 Augusta Co. VA, Henry died ca. 1751.
Source is Ancestry World Tree entry by Melanie Stone, Entry # 784. She lists some sources.
5. Isabella Carson m. 22 OCT 1836 Fountain Co. Indiana to John R. Beedle
Source is Ancestry World Tree entry by Amanda Sanford, Entry # 86381.
(Note: Could Isabella be the same as Elizabeth Carson?)
PS If you are interested in looking at Leonard Robinson's FGRs, send me your name/address and I will snail mail you a photocopy. Please let me know before the 29th of January as I am leaving for vacation then and will not be back until March.

Sandy,
Sorry, Leonard Robinson's family tree file does not say where David Carson died.
In his notes, he wrote:
David Carson -Thought to have been born in Ireland about 1775. He came to the United States as a boy and lived to be 110 years of age.
He was a spy in the Revolutionary War under mad General Anthony Wayne (1745-1796)
He was a first cousin of Lindsey Carson (Kit Carson's father.) Thus, both would have been grandchildren of Alexander Harvey Carson, a Presbyterian minister via west coast of Scotland to Ulster, Ireland to England and to American before 1835, when he settled in Pennsylvania.
Notes on children: The order and dates of the children are unknown. Understand several Beadles (?) are listed as buried at Bethel Cemetery near Cosby (?). Noticed two Beatles (?) among early residents of Andrew County, Missouri.
Sandy, there is a Cosby, Missouri in Andrew Co. MO. Could David have gone there to be with his son, Henry Carson, who married Rebecca Fowler?
Good luck in your research.

<http://www.mccordfamilyassn.com/southwes.htm> IS THIS ABOUT DAVID WHO M. DYSART? Daughters of this James McCord in Tennessee's first county, Washington County, married sons of David Carson, one of the Scotch-Irish frontier fighters at The Battle of Kings Mountain, South Carolina in the American Revolution, and he was a cousin of the famous Kit Carson of western fame. James McCord's wife is believed to have been a Carson. (My note: Washington, TN was near the border with NC and KY and the Cumberland Gap where many of the pioneers migrated from PA on their way to KY and OH) This David may be the same one who married Margaret Ellis. He may have married Mary Burke Apr 21, 1794 in Washington, TN - was Margaret Ellis his 2nd wife? This David had a son James with Mary Burke. He was b. 1797 in TN and he m. Martha McCord. They had a son Ambrose McCord Carson who m. Nancy Inlow Tudor 1847 in Fayette, OH. However, this James would not be the same one who was in Fountain, IN because he was in Fayette, OH in 1840 and 1850. But the fact that this David was referred to as the cousin of Kit Carson and served in the Rev War makes me think it is referring to the same David as the that came in that FGR file. Also, a William Carson in Ireland married Anna McCord and their poss. descendants were in Washington, PA. Wm's poss. son Thomas m. Mary Smith and they were members of the same church in Washington, PA as Nathan Ellis.

Nancy - That information you sent me about David Carson living to the age of 110 may not be that far off. I think I found him and Margaret in the 1850 census...if so, he was not born in Ireland but in PA. If he served in the Rev War he was pretty darn young to be anything other than an errand boy and he did not receive a pension that I can find. Haven't found them in the 1840 or 1860 census. Notice he is living with Benj. and Elizabeth Ducket. An Elizabeth Carson m. Benjamin Duckett Mar 22, 1835 in Fountain, Indiana. The Beedles were there and Joshua Fowler. James Carson, son of James Carson and Rebecca Hill, was in Fountain, IN. (RECALL, THEY HAD A SON ADAM) James m. Leticia Adams. They were from Adams, OH. Elizabeth may be their daughter. If so, I wonder why David was living with them. It is a clue as to which Carson branch David may have been from....those who were in Adams, OH probably. Notice David has a DAVIS living with him. AND GUESS WHERE BENJAMIN DUCKET WAS IN 1860? In Center, Madison, Iowa with Isabella Carson and John Beedle....My Nancy Carson and Ben Fowler were in Iowa too, but they were in a different county (Keokuk). And Meriba Carson and Jack Mabery were in Lucas, IA.
This makes a strong case that David Carson may have been connected to the family of James Carson and Rebecca Hill. I know this is a real stretch, but Alexander Harvey Carson had a son Robert James Carson who m. Elizabeth Ann Reed (according to other researchers). The Carsons in Adams, OH may have been his descendants. There was a Robert Carson in 1810 Hamilton, OH. He was also there in 1820. Could be a grandson of Alexander Harvey Carson.

Email to Nancy:
This theory about David also corresponds with other information recently obtained about Nancy A. Carson's husband, Benjamin Fowler. Ben's father and grandfather were closely associated with Zachariah Price Dewitt and Zachariah was in Nelson, KY from the 1780's until he went to Butler, OH in about 1805 (same time as Benjamin). A "Ben Fouler" was also on the Nelson, KY 1791 Tax List. In the following narrative, notice the reference to "Mad Anthony Wayne". This is beginning to add up nicely....

Sandy
Zachariah Price DeWitt was born of a Dutch family in New Jersey April 24,1768. He and brothers Jacob and Peter made their way to Kentucky in the 1780's, settling in Nelson County, around Bardstown. Zachariah and Elizabeth Teets, who had been born in Pennsylvania April 14,1774, were married on March 11, 1790. It has been written that they "then settled down in a log cabin near their families and started raising corn, hogs, and eventually, nine children." Nevertheless, somehow during these years Zachariah gained a reputation as a hunter and Indian fighter. It is believed he may have been among Kentuckians who marched up Western Ohio in 1794 with Mad Anthony Wayne. The admission of Ohio as a state March 1, 1803, attracted Kentuckians to cheap, newly-available land. By 1805 Zachariah and Elizabeth DeWitt, with seven children, had found their way through almost-uncharted country to the spot where Zachariah built this house on the Four Mile.

I am searching for information on my Benjamin Fowler, born Ireland or
England, married Mary Nailor, and had a daughter Rebecca born 1807 in KY.
He may have been in Madison KY from the tax lists there in the early
1800's, along with James and Jeremiah Fowler. All three later show up in
Butler OH, where Rebecca married Henry Carson in 1829. Henry moved to
Preble OH in 1830, and I lose track of Benjamin. He bought land in
Marion IN, Owen IN and Muskingum OH. Henry lived in Marion IN in 1840
census, then moved to Andrew MO.

Henry Carson was son of David Carson and Margaret Ellis, also of Butler
OH and perhaps Hamilton OH, too.

If anyone could help me on these folks, I would really appreciate it.

David married Margaret ELLIS daughter of Nathan (Capt.) ELLIS and Mary Ann ? WALKER. Margaret was born on 13 Dec 1771 in Prob. Fayette or Washington, PA. She died on 3 Nov 1856.

Rebecca FOWLER was the aunt of Benjamin Nicholas FOWLER who m. Nancy A. Carson (b. ca 1814).
Rebecca FOWLER married Henry Carson (b. 1802/09) who may have been Nancy's brother.
Henry CARSON and Joseph CARSON were possibly 1st cousins.

It has not been proven that Nathan's daughter Margaret is the one who married David Carson. Margaret married unknown Scicily according to one researcher. It is fairly certain that Margaret Ellis who married David Carson was part of this Ellis family because the other Ellis family in that region of Ohio at the time were from Mass and Margaret's birthplace was PA, according to 1880 census records for her daughter Meriba. Also, the Ellis family from Mass did not have a female named Margaret as far as it is known. Nathan Ellis was in the region at the time and had a daughter named Margaret born in the same generation as David Carson. David was also born in PA.

209 F viii Elvira (twin) CARSON was born on 10 Mar 1816. She died in Died at about age 16. She was buried in Beedle Cemetery, Richland, Fountain, Indiana.

According to cemetery records, Elvira Carson is buried in the Beedle Cemetery in Richland Township. No date for her death is given, but it does say that she was the daughter of David and Margaret Carson. I don't see David's name as being buried there, but Margaret is. Margaret died Nov.3, 1856 at the age of 32y 9m 7d. I will see if I find anymore information on David.

Sandy,
I grew up hearing about Elmira’s twin Elvira, who was killed in an accident of some kind when she was 16. I also have a handwritten note from my grandfather, Doug Sills, that his grandmother Elmira Carson had a twin named Elvira, etc. You probably noticed in our online exchange about the Carsons that Sharon Roberts found the Beedle cemetery record (Richland Townshhip) for Elvira. It doesn’t give the date, but gives David and Margaret as her parents.
I believe (all this part is unconfirmed at this point, that the James who shows up in the 1830 and 1840 census for Fountain county, was a son of David and Margarets, and that it was his wife who was the Margaret buried there in the Beedle cemetery with Elvira. There is also a Nancy listed, and I’m not sure who she is.
I have had information from another researcher on this particular part, and I’ll send you a copy as soon as I find it. He mentions the connection with Kit Carson, which I had also heard about while growing up. My grandfather’s note said Elmira was a first cousin of Kit’s. I haven’t found that connection, and it seems to me that David’s birthdate throws him back too early to be Lindsey Carson’s brother. Perhaps a cousin – I guess we’re getting pretty close to finding out. I visited Kit’s home in Taos, NM a year ago and collected books that gave any mention of genealogy. Pretty closed case unless there is that connection to Robert who went to Ohio.
Anyway, I’m attaching the descendent report as it stands now – it’s been awhile since I’ve entered data. I spend more time researching and it tends to pile up for a while before it gets enetered. I’ll try to remember to send you any updates when I have them.
